Ain Sokhna Boat Trips: FAQ

Can I do this as a day trip from Cairo?
Yes, this is the main reason people come to Ain Sokhna. It is roughly two hours each way on the Cairo–Suez road, and both the 1pm Semi-Submarine and the afternoon VIP Cruise leave enough margin to get back to Cairo the same evening. Leave Cairo by 9am for a comfortable day. We can arrange the private transport as part of the booking.
Is the snorkeling in Ain Sokhna as good as Hurghada or Sharm?
Honestly, no. Ain Sokhna sits at the northern end of the Gulf of Suez, where the water is cooler and the reef is younger and less developed than the southern Red Sea. What it offers instead is proximity: you get a real boat day, a seafood buffet and a snorkeling stop without a flight or a night away from Cairo. If the reef itself is your priority, book Hurghada or Marsa Alam.
What is Mount Saaqa?
A steep coastal mountain south of Ain Sokhna where the desert escarpment meets the Gulf of Suez almost vertically, it is the landmark on this stretch of coast and the VIP Cruise sails past it. Seen from the water at the right hour the rock goes from grey to deep orange. There is no landing; it is a sail-past, not a hike.
Where exactly do the boats leave from?
The Semi-Submarine departs from Marina Wadi El-Doum, directly in front of Porto Sokhna. The VIP Cruise sails from the same stretch of coast. If you are staying at one of the Ain Sokhna resorts or compounds, tell us which one and we'll confirm how long it takes to reach the marina and set your arrival time, you should be at the marina 20 minutes before departure.
Why are there different prices for different nationalities?
Ain Sokhna is unusual: it is the only destination we sell where the operator publishes all three tiers for every trip. The VIP Cruise is 1,250 EGP for Egyptians and residents, 1,950 EGP for Arab nationals and $45 for other foreign visitors · and the Semi-Submarine follows the same three-way split. Most Red Sea destinations only publish two tiers, which is why you will see "On request" in the Arab column on our other pages. Bring your Egyptian ID or residence permit on the day if you booked the resident rate.
