Abu Simbel lies far in the south, close to the Sudanese border — too far to drive from Cairo in a day, but easy by air. Fly south in the morning, stand before the four colossal statues of Ramses II and the Temple of Nefertari, both moved block by block in the 1960s to save them from the waters of Lake Nasser, and fly back to Cairo the same evening.
