The classic way to see Abu Simbel. Leave Aswan around 4am, cross the desert as the sun rises and reach the temples before the midday heat. Two temples cut into the sandstone cliffs some 3,300 years ago — the Great Temple of Ramses II with its four colossal seated statues, and the Temple of Nefertari dedicated to Hathor — then moved block by block to higher ground in the 1960s in an international rescue led by UNESCO, to save them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser.
